5 Things Not Many People Know About Jaguar

What is it about well-bred, iconic automobiles like Jaguar that makes everything about them different and intriguing? We could swap legends all day about topics as varied as the SS100, a natural hat trick at Le Mans, and burled walnut.

Did You Know This About Jaguar?

We enjoy Jaguar chats so much, we thought we’d stoke you with some interesting facts for your next Jag chin wag.

  1. Not a Scratch – There can be no flaw in a Jaguar’s paint finish when the new owner first sets eyes upon it. Considering each vehicle must travel across the Atlantic before reaching dealer showrooms here in Toronto and the GTA, that’s quite a feat.

Of course, each vehicle is wrapped in industrial-grade car covers for the journey. But, you guessed it, Jaguar takes it one step beyond. Drivers who usher the vehicles to rail cars for transport are not allowed to wear belt buckles, or anything made of metal, on their clothing. Even metal shoelace eyelets are prohibited.

  2. The Most Expensive Jaguar Ever – It’s a 1955 Jaguar D-Type, the overall winner of the 1956 24 Hours of Le Mans. It’s the only one of the fabled C- & D-Types, that scored four Le Mans wins in five years from 1952 to 1957, to remain intact and in original condition. At an auction in Monterey, California, in 2016, it fetched US$21,780,000.

  3. Many Thanks to the Scottish Angus Bulls – Among other things, leather and wood are integral to what is a Jaguar. And for good reason. The leathers are selected only from the hides of Scottish Angus bulls. They live further north than other local sources of leather, which reduces damage caused by pests like mosquitoes. They are kept in areas without barbed wire fences, and, if it gets too cold outside, they are moved indoors.

  4. World’s Fastest Production Car – From 1992 to 1994, Jaguar’s XJ220 held the title of World’s Fastest Production Car with a top speed of 342 km/h.

  5. The Production of Every Jaguar Involves Emu Feathers  – When a Jaguar is ready for its factory paint finish, it is dusted with ionized emu feathers. Capable of holding an electrostatic charge, the emu-feather dusting prevents dust from landing on the metal bodywork between the pre-paint cleaning and the first step in the painting process.
