Just in case your memory needs a push, at that precise minute in history, the last Land Rover Defender came off the assembly line at the company’s Solihull, UK, assembly line.

If some of you are wondering why anyone would burn the date of the end of production for the Defender into their mind, here’s the reason.

The Land Rover Defender was the direct descendant of the first Land Rover Series I. As such, the Defender was considered by many to be the standard bearer for the marque. If any single vehicle could define what is a Land Rover,  it was the Defender. Many consider it the greatest SUV of all time.

And then they stopped making them!

Hints of the news that every Land Rover enthusiast has been waiting over two years to hear started appearing almost from the beginning of October.

First, there was word coming out of the Paris Motor Show. As the headline suggests, the early news seemed like more of a tease than anything else.

Then, suddenly, there it was. Confirmation of the news from none other than Land Rover itself.
